Bike Rack Information

Bus Bike Racks

For your convenience, BARTA has bicycle racks on all of the buses. Each rack holds two bikes and is very easy to use. Plus, it makes you more mobile than ever before! Bike to a BARTA bus stop as an alternative to pedaling your entire route, to avoid inclement weather, or to hurdle obstacles like hills and crowded city streets. You’ll go farther and faster than ever! It’s also a great way to get some exercise and stay in shape. It keeps cars off the road which helps relieve traffic congestion and improves our air quality.

Just use the bicycle racks located on the front of ALL BARTA fixed route buses to take your bicycle for a ride on BARTA at no extra charge.

Loading/Unloading your Bike

Be a good biker and have your bicycle ready to load and free of any loose items. When the bus arrives, indicate to the driver that you will be loading your bike. Use the following three steps to secure your bike to the bus rack:

Step 1
At the front of the bus, grab and squeeze the bicycle rack handle, then lower the rack out and away from the bus.

Step 2
Lift your bike onto the rack and align its wheels into the wheel wells closest to the bus.

Step 3
Secure your bike by rotating the handle and setting the support arm over your bike’s tire, and you’re done!

Step 4
When getting off the bus, inform your driver that you will be unloading your bike. To unload your bike, simply reverse steps #2 and #3 from above. Remember to put the bike rack in its upright and locked position if you are the last to use it.

Travel Tips

You are responsible for loading/unloading your bike in a timely manner. For safety reasons, bus operators cannot get off the bus to help you.

If you are unable to secure your bike, please do not delay the bus.

Racks are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bikes are not allowed on the inside of BARTA buses.

All bikes 16” or larger fit easily and securely on the rack, even children’s bikes. All bikes load in exactly the same way, quickly and easily. BARTA bicycle racks accommodate most 2-wheeled bicycles. Motorized bikes, tricycles, or tripods are not accommodated.

Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Bikes are mounted at your own risk.

BARTA is not responsible for theft or damage while your bike is on the rack.
